231 PLM 6001

Type: Vehicle

Description:

The PLM 6001 locomotive, built in 1909, is one of the legendary steam engines designed for heavy express trains.

In 1909, it was the first of a whole family of powerful and fast locomotives that underwent significant modernizations over time. Locomotive no. 6001 is therefore considered the ancestor of the future 231 series, which later gave rise to the famous 5-231 K and the streamlined 231 H.

Over the years, the original design was modernized, for example by using superheated steam, higher boiler pressure (20 bar), or Lentz valve gear. These upgrades not only extended the lifespan of these machines but also made them some of the most powerful European steam locomotives of their time.
