t400

Type: Vehicle

Description:

The T400 was a Czechoslovak trolleybus produced in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was a robust three-axle vehicle measuring 11.4 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width. The trolleybus featured an all-metal body and a chassis with a central load-bearing tube and swinging half-axles – a typical Tatra design of that era.

The T400 trolleybus followed the Tatra concept – the chassis with a central load-bearing tube and swinging half-axles was derived from the Tatra 111 truck. The body was produced at the Tatra Smíchov plant, while the electric equipment came from ČKD Prague. One major advantage was easy maintenance thanks to all electric components being mounted directly on the chassis. On the right side, the vehicle featured three electro-pneumatically controlled folding doors.

A total of 195 units were produced and operated in cities such as Prague, Bratislava, Ostrava, and Most. The largest number – 136 vehicles – was delivered to Prague's transport company. The T400 proved to be reliable and robust in service. The last units were in operation until 1972, when they were finally replaced by newer trolleybus models.

Although it no longer runs through the streets, several units have been preserved as historical exhibits. You can find them in cities like Brno, Prague, Ostrava, and Bratislava. Thanks to its technical elegance and striking retro look, the Tatra T400 remains one of the most popular exhibits in transport museums and retro events.
