The development of the M1 units began in the 1990s, when it became necessary to replace the aging Soviet Ečs and 81-71 trains. The first train entered service in 2000. The design was created in cooperation with ČKD, Siemens, and other European companies. The project built on previous experience but introduced a new standard – for example, a fully walk-through train, modern design, and improved safety.
The five-car unit consists of cars with different equipment and cannot be separated. It offers comfortable padded seats, space for strollers and wheelchairs, full information panels, and effective ventilation. The aluminum body reduces weight and energy consumption. Compared to previous trains, the M1 is quieter, more powerful, and more accessible.
An export version of the M1, called M1-MARA, was developed for the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo. Three-car units with pantograph power collection and air conditioning were delivered in 2006–2007 and serve the city's only metro line. It is a rare example of modern Czech railway technology being exported outside Europe.
