After 1989, it became clear that Prague metro trains were aging and approaching the end of their service life. Purchasing new trains was not financially feasible, so it was decided to modernize the older 81-717/714 units. They were stripped down and fitted with new components. The first modernized unit was produced in cooperation between Škoda and ČKD Tatra and entered service in 1998.
The modernized cars are labeled Škoda 2Mt, 3Mt, and 4Mt depending on their position and equipment in the set. They are powered by four motors with an output of 110 kW, enabling smooth acceleration up to 80 km/h. The modernization involved both technology and the interior – new seats, flooring, and lighting were added. The driver’s cabin is now more ergonomic and meets current safety standards. Today, the 81-71M trains are still in daily operation on lines A and B. They were replaced on line C in 2005 by new M1 sets. Despite their age, the modernized trains have proven to be reliable and durable. Thanks to regular maintenance and gradual updates to the electronics, they remain fully functional even after more than two decades.
